Not too long ago an admissions officer from one of the nation’s top universities told me he was convinced that “The thoughtful college search is dead.” What he meant was that too many students rely on shortcuts like college rankings rather than making a decision that is personal and authentic, based on careful consideration of who they are and what they want from the college experience.
As a college counselor who has devoted my career to helping students think about college choice as a journey of self-discovery and a bridge from adolescence into adulthood, I found the comment disturbing, and maybe even depressing. I therefore decided to devote myself to be an advocate, an evangelist, or just a voice in the wilderness for the Thoughtful College Search.
